Day of Action: End Precarious Employment

There is a big elephant in the room of postsecondary education, that negatively affects students, community, tenured faculty, and contract faculty. This is chronic underfunding.

  • For contract faculty, it means hanging by a thread.
  • For full time faculty, it means hitting a wall with workloads.
  • For students, it means getting hosed by increased tuition costs.
  • For communities, it means putting their stability at risk.

Chronic underfunding is the root cause of precarity on campus and astronomically high tuition fees. This underfunding is the reason 50 per cent of undergraduate courses are taught by precariously employed faculty who lack job security, equal pay and fair working conditions. This big elephant is the reason domestic undergraduate tuition fees in Ontario are 50% higher than the rest of the country and international undergraduate tuition fees are 64% higher than the rest of the country.

We need to address the big elephant in the room. Contract Faculty deserve job security, equal pay and fair working conditions. Adequate, stable and long-term funding of postsecondary education is needed to end precarity on campus. Chronic underfunding has led to overwhelming workloads for full-time tenured faculty at Ontario’s universities. Ontario’s universities need more tenure-stream faculty.

It has led to crises like the one facing Laurentian University.

Today WLUFA joins OCUFA and Faculty Associations across the province in a Social Media Day of Action to end precarious employment in postsecondary education.
